Meta threads go live (sort of)
The Threads app won’t go live until tomorrow (July 6), but we were given a glimpse of the interface earlier today. This is because the web version went live very quickly, it appears it is no longer available. A small group of influencers and brands were happily posting – never mind, Meta, our initial invitation must have been lost in the post…
I had a quick tinker and it’s a text-based Instagram. You can switch to dark mode by clicking on the Threads logo at the top. And your options are mainly to write posts, like posts and reply. But it is clear that this will deal a huge blow to Twitter when it is already unbalanced – we have already seen Twitter this week ‘rate limit’ spring on users without warningAnd put a new version of the popular TweetDeck behind a paywall.
Looks like this week’s rumble is the real billionaire cage fight…

Are Meta threads mired in EU laws?
The less good news for Threads (or anyone living in the EU) is that it looks like the app won’t initially launch outside the US and UK. According to irish independentA Meta spokesperson has said that the Twitter rival will not be launched in the EU “at this point”. We’re just confirming this with Meta and will update here when we hear back.
This explains why the app is not showing up in the app stores of EU countries. The reason for this is apparently Europe’s strict privacy laws – while the EU regulator hasn’t blocked the app, Meta needed more time to prepare it for a full launch in Europe.
Nevertheless, a META spokesperson told Bloomberg It’s also preparing to launch Threads in 100 countries with “more coming soon,” so hopefully it won’t take long for the EU to join the chat.
