Engineering design and manufacturing company, Illustrious Healthcare Solutions has partnered with University Hospital Southampton (UHS) to develop a Critical Care Transfer Stack (CCTS) to improve the internal transfer of critically ill patients in acute healthcare environments .
CCTS is a mobile frame that is attached to a bed to support medical equipment such as monitors, ventilators, o2 Cylinders & Accessories. These instruments are mounted on the vertical aspect of the CCTS for visibility during patient transfer. The CCTS also transports cylinder holders, suction units, includes integrated storage areas and, importantly, has an integrated power supply unit.
Illustrious and UHS have developed a life-support product that remains robust in high-stress environments while meeting the complex specifications required. It is also suitable for use with many different types of beds in a hospital setting.
The two organizations collaborated on the co-development of this product in 2021 after the Portsmouth-based engineering company provided chart trolleys for intensive care units during the first wave of COVID-19, arriving at the hospital.
The project involved close collaboration between Illustrious engineers and the hospital clinical engineering staff on all aspects of development. The product has been tested for effectiveness in 35 theaters at Southampton General Hospital as well as general, cardiac, pediatric and neurological intensive care units and the emergency department, with extensive feedback contributing to the final development.
The CCTS has a medical device classification (Class 1). It is registered with the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) and is compliant with the European Medical Device Regulation (MDR).
It has an integrated power supply unit with medical grade isolation transformer specially developed for the device.
Sean Folan is a healthcare scientist specializing in critical care at NHS Regional Trauma Centers for over 15 years and is also the co-founder and director of Illustrious Healthcare Solutions.
He adds: “From the outset, UHS has shared its vast expertise with us and worked closely with our engineering design and development team. It is a privilege to work with UHS and we look forward to sharing the benefits of this product with others.”
