In rare good news this week, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin revealed that he, along with Sandeep Nailwal, has pledged $100 million to Covid relief.
On June 9, Buterin said that he and Sandeep “discussed and jointly concluded these and other projects are high-impact and require follow-up funding.”
“That’s why we’ve decided to add another $100 million to these projects.”
Last year, the pair donated a similar amount through the community-driven Crypto Relief project.

Vitalik is supporting the COVID cause
He added that Crypto Relief has put in $90 million USDC from its original SHIB donation, and is adding another $10 million from its own funds. Vitalik donated 50 trillion SHIB tokens to the project in May 2022.
Crypto Relief is a project started by Buterin and Nailwal to provide long-term strategic funding for healthcare charities in India.
Buterin acknowledged that Covid was still a global problem, along with future pandemics. “Working in India remains an important part of the solution,” he said, adding that we also need an integrated global approach.
To achieve public health solutions, Buterin has committed to “the maximum feasible open-source emphasis for everything we fund”.

Another focus, he said, is on “solutions that rely not on radical behavior change, but on medical and infrastructure work.” They can be behind the scenes, but they also need to be transparent and open to public scrutiny, he said.
Crypto is being used for donations to a wide variety of causes and projects. These range from relief efforts in war-torn Ukraine to Turkey earthquake emergency donations to help Canadian truckers.
