we got 15 minutes solid star field Microsoft’s Xbox and gameplay at Bethesda showcased last year, and today we’re taking a really in-depth look at Bethesda’s first new IP in 25 years. Described by game director Todd Howard as “Skyrim in space,” the RPG is really taking shape ahead of its September 6 debut.
Today Bethesda decided to show us more detail about star fieldThe game includes cities and settlements, skill trees, upgrades and space battles. 45 minutes of deep dive is a lot, and it really feels like if Bethesda can pull it off you’ll be able to live out all your dreams of space exploration.
The main story focuses on the Constellation, the last group of space explorers. You’ll meet them in the capital city of New Atlantis, which Bethesda says is the largest it has ever built. It is big in size, art, crowd and discovery. New Atlantis looks like it’s full of non-playable characters (NPCs) just living their lives and full dialogue.
According to Bethesda, we already know that there are over 1,000 planets open to players and that these locations strike a balance between reality and entertainment. Gravity varies on each planet, so on some you will feel like you are flying which will affect gunplay and more. When you leave a planet and go into space you will also have to navigate asteroid fields and you can explore abandoned ships.
Your ship is vital to navigation, and you can buy ships and fully customize them with purchasable upgrades. This also extends to customizing cargo holds and living quarters, and Bethesda claims the ships can be customized as “almost anything you want”. Certain members of the constellation can travel with you on your ship, and each companion has unique quest lines. You can also place additional crew on the spaceport in the game. Once you are on a planet you will be able to either return to your ship or fast travel back.
Ships also include a power system that you can balance so that your ship is faster or more ready for weapons and shields for aerial combat. After destroying enemy ships you can loot them, scrap them, or even board the enemy ship. Once you take control of an enemy ship it joins your own fleet and it’s all yours.
character building is also a big part of star field and its skill system. The character generation system features facial shapes, makeup smudges, scars, teeth settings, and more. Once you’ve chosen a character it’s time to rank it up. Every time you level up you get a skill point to unlock skills, and ranks are unlocked through challenges. There are a total of five different skill trees with four ranks per skill, so there’s a mix of customization here.
Bethesda also showcased its behavior system, buff abilities or your character’s options. You can choose behaviors that can include a damage buff or a way to have the same religious beliefs as enemies so you can avoid combat.
You can also set up outposts on planets and harvest resources while you’re away. Once you have resources you can craft items. This includes adding different modes to the gun, like suppressors for stealthy play and explosive rounds for when you really want to blow things up.
star field Looks massive and there’s more to come. Bethesda teased that players could gain super natural powers during its stream and even expanded the story to a shattered space for the game.
