Gujarat Titans and Team India opener Shubman Gill became the first player to complete a unique quadruple of centuries with tons in all formats of the game apart from the Indian Premier League (IPL). Gill, who scored his first century in the IPL 2023 match against Sunrisers Hyderabad on Monday, also scored hundreds in Tests, ODIs and T20Is this season. Three of these centuries in T20Is, Tests and IPL have come at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
Gill, on his way to his century, brought up his half-century in just 22 balls, but did not hit a single six in the half-century. It was the fastest fifty by a batsman breaking the record held by Mumbai Indians’ Sachin Tendulkar – who achieved the feat against Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) in IPL 2010.

Gill and Sunrisers Hyderabad pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar also became the first opposing pair to take a century and a five-wicket haul in the same innings in the IPL. This feat has happened only twice before in T20 cricket – Karun Nair (111) for Karnataka and V Athisaraj Davidson (5 for 30) for Tamil Nadu in the 2017-18 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and Saber Jakhil for Belgium (100 not out) and Aqib Iqbal (5 for 5) for Austria in a T20I in 2021.
“My IPL debut was against SRH, now my IPL hundred is against them. I am very happy. It has come a full circle. Hopefully I will score more hundreds this season,” Gill said at the post-match presentation ceremony.
Gill smashed 101 off 58 balls as defending champions Gujarat Titans put in the bat at 188 for 9. “I am not the kind of person who thinks too much about my last innings. The focus is on what is needed at the moment. Hitting Abhishek for six was the most satisfying moment because he is my childhood friend.
In reply, SRH were reduced to 59 for 7 by Mohammed Shami, who claimed 4/21, and Mohit Sharma also took 4 wickets. However, they managed to reach 154 for 9 thanks to a 44-ball 64 by Heinrich Klaasen.
GT’s 34-run win over SRH was enough for them to book their playoff berth in IPL 2023, while SRH became the second team after Delhi Capitals to be knocked out of the playoff race.
