Weather Update: Rain wreaks havoc from Kashmir to Delhi and Kerala; IMD issued warning for many places

Light to heavy rains lashed parts of the national capital for the second consecutive day in the early hours of Sunday and the Met department has predicted more rain in the next few days. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) in its daily weather forecast said that there is a possibility of heavy rains in North India in the next four days. “Heavy to very heavy rains will occur over North India for the next four to five days. The India Meteorological Department on Saturday issued a red alert for seven districts in the state and an orange alert for three districts for the next 48 hours as heavy rains continued to lash the state. The IMD has also issued an alert for flash floods, landslides and rock fall in the state. Himachal Pradesh Police said that a fallen tree blocked the road on National Highway 105 connecting Manpura and Nalagarh near Siddharth Factory in Khera district following incessant rains in the district.

Normal vehicular movement was restored on the highway following a cleanliness drive by the authorities. In the state capital Shimla, the railway track between Koti and Sanwara was closed due to floods following heavy rains on Thursday. “Due to flooding following heavy rains in Shimla, a railway track on tunnel number 10 between Koti Railway Station and Sanwara Railway Station was closed on Thursday,” an official statement said. According to officials, the state has already suffered major damage to infrastructure due to incessant rains.

Hundreds of vehicles were stranded in Udhampur on Saturday due to the closure of the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway due to bad weather. Earlier on Saturday, a road connecting Tunnel 3 and 5 in Ramban district was damaged after a landslide. After the landslide incident, the national highway was closed till further notice.

Heavy to very heavy rain was observed in many parts of Kerala and Lakshadweep on Saturday. IMD tweeted, “Rainfall at most places over Kerala & Lakshadweep. Heavy to very heavy rainfall in cm reported as follows: Amini (Lakshadweep UT) 15, Padinjarthara Dam AWS (Wayanad District) 12, Kudulu (Kasaragod District)” and Peringom AWS (Kannur district) 9 each.” It also issued a yellow alert for some districts in Kerala. Meanwhile, overnight rains in Kottayam left various residential areas of the city water-logged. “Yellow alert has been issued for Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod districts of Kerala,” the IMD said.
