Microsoft is experimenting with the ability to map keyboard keys on the Xbox Series X which is currently available in beta for Xbox Insider members.
Xbox Series Announced via Xbox Insider Alpha patch notes, the functionality is currently limited to the Xbox Adaptive Controller and Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2, it is not yet known whether it will be open to users with the standard Xbox Wireless Controller.
The full post explains how Xbox Insiders can access the new feature: “To get started, open Xbox Accessories app > Configure > Create a new profile or edit an existing one > Select a button to map > Select Primary or Shift > Then go to the New Key tab, However, you won’t have free control of every keyboard command and shortcut yet. “You can map a given controller button to just one key, with any combination of modifier keys (Win, Shift, Ctrl, Alt). For example, you can map Ctrl+Alt+W, but not Ctrl+Alt+W+E.
As expected from a feature in beta, keyboard input support remains limited and game dependent and the full list is not yet in place but this may change over time. A reported flaw is that some titles on the Surface may have a “testing” tag next to them if functionality is claimed but not offered. The “Learn more” button is also not working at the time of writing, but this too may be eliminated in the coming days.
It remains to be seen how some of the best Xbox Series X games will benefit from being able to use keyboard key presses and shortcuts. If it is fully released and begins to be supported across platforms it will change how users interact with the game going forward.
