Jony Ive and his team at Lovefrom have created a new design for King Charles III called the “Astra Carta” seal. The seal represents the UK’s call to action for the public and private sectors to work together on the responsible and sustainable use of outer space. This is his second project for King Charles this year after Lovefrom recently created a royal emblem to announce the king’s coronation.
seal, which is animated on sustainability initiative official site, is a circular badge with the Latin words “Estra Carta” in capital letters set in the center under a crown. In the centre, a blue dot represents the planet Earth, while the floral path taken by the constellations, the Sun, the Moon and Venus surrounds it. Around the outer edge, smaller text reads, “To Care for the Infinite Wonders of the Universe,” paired with a Latin interpretation of the same phrase.
I described their team’s approach to design in a blurb from the site:
“We were fascinated by the celestial rhythms illuminated during this design process, and how they are deeply connected to the patterns of life on Earth. It seems an important time to do more to protect the natural world in the broadest sense, and we are extremely honored to be able to contribute to this important and pioneering project.
In typical style, Lovefrom site discusses in detail how it arrived at this design, breaking down parts of the work to show how it arrived at the overall image. As part of this, it depicts a flowery “sacred geometry” of curves and lines that, at first glance, may be reminiscent of that famous “Pepsi Energy Sphere”. design documentexcept that the path of venus it takes inspiration from is a real thing And actually makes sense in this context:
It’s not the simplicity we’ve come to expect from Ive-led projects like iOS 7, but his work here is in line with such designs. Terra Carta Seal The group, created for the initiative in 2021, again highlights sustainable business practices in the country. There, the group sought to “reinforce a sense of harmony and fertility, allowing flora and fauna to gently take control”, resulting in something more elaborate than Ewe is generally known for, An ornamentation that is a throughline in this series of seals.
