Group A table-toppers India and Kuwait will face off in the last group match of the SAFF Championship 2023 at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru on Tuesday. Both the teams are tied on points (6) and goal difference (+6) and have already qualified for the semi-finals.

Thus, the winners will determine who tops the group and will play the second-placed team from Group B in the last four. For India, only a win will give them the pole position as they are behind Kuwait in terms of goals scored.

“In terms of results, there is not much to it other than getting slightly easier opponents in the semi-finals. We will approach this game like any other game and try to win it. Maintaining a clean sheet is always our first target,” AIFF quoted head coach Igor Stimac as saying, reiterating the importance of their strong defence, which has not conceded defeat in the last eight matches.

“If it is a draw, so be it. We will still be down to make sure we go past the semi-finals. We need to look at the tournament as a whole. If it’s possible to win every game, that’s even better. If not, the end goal is always to win the title.”

Stimac served a one match suspension in the last game against Nepal, where the Blue Tigers made sure his absence was not felt and won 2–0. The team that defeated Pakistan on the first day made eight changes and while India struggled to find their rhythm in the first half, they got the job done in the second half.

India have faced Kuwait three times at the senior level (one win, two losses). The last meeting was a friendly in Abu Dhabi in 2010, which ended in a 1-9 defeat for India. The only time the Blue Tigers had beaten the West Asians was in 2004 in a 3–2 friendly win in Kuwait City. According to Stimac, Kuwait may now be ranked 143, but this does not reflect their true quality.
