An attacker who caused panic throughout the community by hijacking Tornado Cash Governance is now offering to undo his hack – and while not everyone thinks the hacker can be trusted, apparently they have the guts to do it. There is little choice in the matter.
On May 21, the passing of a malicious proposal allowed the attacker to gain complete control over the governance of Tornado Cash. With full control over the governance of the decentralized crypto mixer, the attacker was in a position to inflict massive damage, given that they could retract all closing votes, remove all tokens in the governance contract, and brick routers. While the story unfolded, community member Tornadosaurus-Hex or Mr. Tornadosaurus Hex took proactive steps to mitigate the potential damage by publishing a subsequent proposal, requesting all members to withdraw all funds locked in the regime , as shown below.
However, Mr. Tornadosaurus was unsure of the effectiveness of the new proposal given the raider’s hold on the Hex (Hex) mixer’s rule. To everyone’s surprise, hours after the hack, the attacker surprisingly reached out to the Tornado Cash community with a new proposal, hinting at their intention to give back governance control.

As shown above, Hex informed the community about the attacker’s plan, saying:
“The attacker posted a new proposal to restore the regime’s status quo. I think there’s a good chance he’s going to carry it out.
Hex further explained that while the community has no choice but to follow the attacker’s chosen method of giving back governance control, its due diligence with respect to verifying the storage layout is out.

While many community members showed optimism towards the attacker’s alleged change of heart, others speculated that this was a ploy to pump up the price of TORN tokens before cashing out.

On the bright side, the crypto ecosystem has seen a sharp decline in overall hacks in the first quarter of 2023.

However, history suggests that crypto users should not be complacent as 2022 saw a spike in crypto hacks soon after recording a slow phase.
