World No. 1 Inga Swiatek successfully defended her French Open 2023 title after a hard-fought win over unseeded Carolina Muchova in the women’s singles final on Saturday. Swiatek won nine of the first 11 games to defeat unseeded Karolina Muchova, but her opponent made an incredible comeback to push the match into the third set. But eventually, Swiatek would prevail 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 late Saturday in Paris after Muchova double-failed on match point. And so, Swiatek defended his title at Roland Garros, winning his third major title in four years and fourth overall.
After the win, there was a hilarious moment where the French Open trophy lid fell to the ground while Iga was celebrating the moment. An officer then came to the rescue and gave the lid back to an embarrassed Inga.

Muchova, ranked No. 46, dropped four points in a row in her first serve game as Swiatek raced to a 3–0 lead. But Muchova retired when Swiatek served for 3-1. She started hitting long groundstrokes, which made it possible for her to reach the net and score. Swiatek fended off Muchova’s lone break-point opportunity with a powerful, lashing backhand in a match that lasted more than nine minutes and featured four double-digit points.
The second set began with a repeat of the first, and Swiatek once again led 3–0. However, this time Muchova created a second break opportunity and took advantage of it by winning a forehand down the line to return to serve at 2–3.
As the momentum continued, Muchova broke Swiatek for the third time in a row. But three games later, at 2-all, it was back on serve. The deciding break came in the seventh game. It was Love-30 after a double fault by Swiatek, 15-40 after a beautiful drop shot, and 4-3 after Muchova dodged Swiatek across the court.
To tie the game, Swiatek took the lead. And then held a second break point to take a 5-4 lead. Muchova’s lone third double fault proved to be the deciding factor.
“Last year was definitely a confirmation for me that the first time was not a coincidence or anything like that. This one, for sure, it was a bit tougher in terms of injuries and pressure, and also making a comeback in this tournament. As a defending champion, I just feel like it’s a little different.
